Site details


Site description: Several larger islands with overgrown coastal slopes, dams, marshes, grassland and reedbeds, and some coastal areas with cultivated land and scattered settlements along south-west Zealand. Marine areas surrounding this IBA (previously included within it, following Grimmett and Jones 1989) are now included in Smålandsfarvandet (site 118).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: More than 20,000 waterbirds use the site. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (max. 5, wintering). Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons.
