Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Delineation rationale: The site boundary is based upon a precautionary seaward extension of 25 km around at sea sightings of Beck's Petrel yielding a population estimate of 58-115 individuals from Bird, J. P. (in press) Targeted searches to identify nesting grounds of Beck’s Petrel Pseudobulweria becki; Shirihai, H. (2008a) Rediscovery of Beck’s Petrel Pseudobulweria becki, and other oservations of tubenoses from the Bismarck archipelago, Papua New Guinea.
