Site details

Site description: Coastal peninsula with an enclosed brackish lagoon, grazing-meadows and shallow fjord area with shoals, banks, intertidal flats and saltmarshes.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The numbers of most wintering and passage species have declined markedly since 1983 (formerly more than 20,000 waterbirds), when the site was designated as a Special Protection Area. The most recent available breeding bird data are from 1988 when several species, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, were recorded breeding at the site, including Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo and S. paradisaea.

Threats

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Agricultural intensification, industrialization and urbanization have resulted in the deterioration of water quality, presumably causing bird declines.
