Site details

Site description: A shallow sea area with islands and islets holding saltmarsh, and drained and cultivated areas with scattered habitation. Æbelø also supports smaller areas of woodland including some highly valuable old-growth Fagus-dominated forests with other species admixed (Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, Tilia platyphyllus (only site in Denmark), and Ilex aquifolium).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site. Numbers of wintering birds have for unknown reasons decreased since the site was designated as a Special Protection Area.
