Site details


Site description: This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Japan Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Pacific, Northwest FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 51597 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 3812 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 1.95 m/s and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 10.42 and 20.54 °C.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: 2 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Matsumaekojima islet include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Rhinoceros Auklet (LC) and Black-tailed Gull (LC) 50000-80000 individuals.
