Site details
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: The site boundary is based upon a seaward extension of 70 km around Taka Atoll to encompass the foraging range of IBA threshold numbers of waterbirds based upon a 1967 population estimate of 222,000 individuals from Amerson, A.B. 1969. Ornithology of the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. Atoll Research Bulletin 127. National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., U.S.A. Amerson 1969. Mark O'Brien 2014. Amerson 1969 suggests no more than 55,000 individual waterbirds on site. Not sure where 222,000 comes from.
