Site description: The site boundary is based upon a seaward extension of 3 km around Tikehau to encompass the foraging range of IBA threshold numbers of Common White Tern based upon a 1994 population estimate of 3,000 individuals from Intes, A. and Caillart, B. (1994) An atoll of the Tuamotu archipelago (French Polynesia). Part I. Environment and biota of the Tikehau Atoll (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia). Atoll Research Bulletin, 415: 1-34.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
