Site details


Site description: Flood-plain of the slow-flowing River Elbe with remnant riverine forests, oxbow lakes, wet grassland, flooded meadows and dunes.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: The site holds 20,000 or more waterbirds in winter, on a regular basis. The site is a migratory bottleneck, where more than 3,000 Grus grus regularly pass. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Anser erythropus (wintering).
