Site details

Site description: Part of the lower Rhine flood-plain which, as a result of embankment construction and river engineering, now only floods irregularly. Habitats include reed Phragmites-filled ditches, abandoned gravel- and clay-pits and riverine forests (mainly Populus sp. with Salix in inundated areas). Used primarily for agriculture, this IBA was known as `Insultheimer Hof: Ludwig-See und Im Schacher' (former site DE068) in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
