Site description: The area is a mosaic of moraine lakes, reedbeds (Phragmites), fens, peatbogs and forest.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: The site regularly holds more than 20,000 passage waterbirds, and is a migratory bottleneck site˜up to 3,000 Grus grus regularly pass. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Otis tarda (breeding).
