Site details


Site description: A storage lake used for water management since 1967, sometimes dry in winter. It is surrounded by grassland with reeds Phragmites, scrub, and alluvial forest flooded by the River Helme.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is a migratory bottleneck, where up to 4,000 Grus grus regularly pass. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (5 breeding pairs).
