Site description: A large area of marsh and polders, intensively used for agriculture. Water-levels are regulated.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important passage and wintering area for geese and waders. The site holds more than 20,000 waterbirds on passage and in winter, on a regular basis. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Branta ruficollis (wintering).
