Site details

Site description: The site comprises the old course of the River Rhine with oxbow lakes. The flood-plain area is dominated by meadows. The IBA comprises two sites from the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989): Kühkopf-Knoblauchsaue (former site DE064) and Lampertheimer Altrhein (former site DE065).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: This is an important area for breeding and wintering waterbirds and is nationally important for breeding Luscinia svecica, as well as for species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca, Crex crex (breeding).
