Site details


Site description: The site comprises part of the former flood-plain of the now embanked River Rhine. Habitat-types include riverine forest, relict Alnus swamp-forest, springs, gravel-pits, reedbeds (Phragmites), dry grassland, meadows, arable land and orchards. An introduced species of herb (Solidago) is spreading within the native vegetation.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important stop-over site for passage wildfowl, and is nationally important for breeding Sterna hirundo.
