Site details

Site description: A small freshwater marsh bordered by pine woodland, located in central Portugal, very close to the town of Coimbra, on a tributary of the Mondego river. An important part of a network of small wetlands in the Mondego valley, which includes two other IBAs: Paul do Taipal (009) and Paul de Arzila (010).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The reedbeds are important for two breeding waterbirds, and support large numbers of migratory passerines during autumn migration. Wintering duck numbers regularly exceed 2,000 birds.
