Site description: An extensive evergreen woodland of cork oak (Q.suber) that is managed for explotation of cork and shrubland is used for agriculture and shepherding.Also there are some woodland of Q. ilex and some irrigative and dry cultivation.The area contains a plateaus where River Seda forms a valley. This site holds Albufeira (lagoon) of Montargil, Albufeira of Maranhão, little dams and the Rivers Seda, Sor, Almadaf and Raia
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Specially important for the number of raptors. There are 11 species of raptors that breeding in this site, the global density is about 60-80 pairs/100Km2. It is possible to watch, during all the year, individuals of Hieraaetus fasciatus and Pandion haliaetus(1-2),Circus cyaneus (2-3), Circus aeruginosus (1-2) during the winter; ocasionally Aquila chrysaetos.
