Site details


Site description: A small, open reservoir near Konush village, with beds of Typha, and a group of trees on its south bank, and surrounded by arable land. Land-uses include fish-farming, irrigation and hunting.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is important for migrating and wintering Phalacrocorax pygmeus, and supports one of the most important breeding colonies of Nycticorax nycticorax in Bulgaria.

Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The main problems are the cutting-down of nesting trees at the colonies, the burning of reedbeds, hunting, and disturbance of nesting birds by people close to colonies.
