Site details
Site description: A water-storage reservoir which does not freeze in winter, since an associated thermoelectric power-station uses the water as coolant. The water is also used for irrigation.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The reservoir supports large and important numbers of Phalacrocorax carbo and P. pygmeus in winter. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Pelecanus crispus (6-17 in winter), Aythya nyroca (max. 2 in winter).
