Site details


Site description: The Derventski hills are situated between the Tundzha river and the border with Turkey. They are partly covered by broadleaved deciduous forests of Quercus and Carpinus, with Mediterranean trees and shrubs, and there are also open grassy and bushy areas with scattered trees, and arable land. Shrubland is dominated by Paliurus, Jasminum and Nigella. Land-uses are extensive stock-rearing and cultivation, hunting and forestry.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: One of the most important breeding sites for Aquila pomarina in Bulgaria. Significant proportion (³1%) of national population breeding at site: Circaetus gallicus (1 pair), Bubo bubo (1 pair), Dendrocopos medius (min. 3 pairs), Hippolais olivetorum (min. 2 pairs).
