Site details

Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: The site was identified based on data collected between 2012-2013 (project SIMARINE-NATURA LIFE10NAT/SI/141). The site was delineated in 2015 during an on-going arbitration between Slovenia and Croatia concerning the disputed national border. To avoid overlapping with the disputed area of the sea the site's western border was slightly adjusted, meaning that the ornithological criteria were partly overrided. In 2017 the arbitration was finished and the previous adjustment was undone since the unadjusted IBA fully fits within the Slovenian waters as determined by the arbitral tribunal. This resulted in slightly larger site area and estimated population size compared to the original site from 2015. Flagged as possible transboundary IBA (Italy, Croatia?).
