Site description: The site is included in the Guinea-Bissau Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The site contains the Bolama-Bijagós UNESCO-MAB Biosphere Reserve.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: Seaward extension of important colonies of Royal Tern, Caspian Tern, Slender-billed Gull and Grey-headed Gull. All the previous species tigger IBA criteria: Royal Tern (LC) 52135-86893 individuals, Caspian Tern (LC) 360-600 individuals and Slender-billed Gull (LC) 10000-10000 individuals.
Delineation rationale: Seaward extension of important colonies of Royal Tern, Caspian Tern and Slender-billed Gull. Boundaries identified based on foraging distances (tracking data from GPS).
