Site details


Site description: A large brackish lake on the Romanian plain, fed by fresh water from the Ialomita river. There are small areas of aquatic vegetation, primarily along the western shore. Agricultural lands and fish-ponds form the surrounds.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: This is an important breeding site for waterbirds, particularly ducks, and also passage and wintering waterbirds.
