Site details
Site description: A fish-farm that comprises c.12 ponds surrounded by dykes and canals, situated in the Danube valley. Narrow reedbeds (Phragmites) fringe the ponds; the total area of open water is 220 ha. Pasture, arable fields and Populus plantations form the surrounds.

Additional biodiversity: This is an important feeding area for waterbirds breeding at Sreberna reserve (Bulgaria), in riverine forest along the Danube and at other wetland sites. It is also an important stop-over site during spring and autumn migration. Passage species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Branta ruficollis, Aythya nyroca, Haliaeetus albicilla and Gallinago media.

Threats
Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Piscivorous birds, particularly Phalacrocorax carbo, are driven away with gunshots and are sometimes killed. In late autumn the water is drained from the majority of the ponds until early spring˜it is not a suitable site for wintering waterbirds. A management plan exists for the site.
