Site details


Site description: A large embayment of Hvalfjördur, including a bay and estuarine flats from Hvalfjardareyri to Búdarsandur. There are mussel banks (Mytilus) offshore.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Also notable in winter are Somateria mollissima (c.2,000) and Haematopus ostralegus (c.500, which is 10% or more of the national total in winter).
