Site details


Site description: The site comprises a large alluvial plain in the north-west of the country, subject to periodic inundation, with some surface water remaining throughout the year. Dense Acacia shrub and steppe-grassland occurs along the northern edge of the site, which is extensively grazed.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: See Box and Table 2 for key species. Counts made in December 1998 also revealed 700 Calidris minuta, 650 Himantopus himantopus and 286 Recurvirostra avosetta. Non-bird biodiversity: None known to BirdLife International.

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: No threats are known, although overgrazing and excessive felling of timber may be expected. Persecution of some species (e.g. collection of Struthio camelus eggs for sale as tourist souvenirs) may occur, but the impact of such activities is unknown.
