Site details
Site description: The site is some 110 km north-west of the town of El Golea, in the Sahara. It lies in the huge sand desert, the Erg Occidental. No further information is available.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: See Box for key species. There is one record of 20 Aythya nyroca wintering on the site in 1994. Other wintering waterbirds, in addition to 1,500 Anas strepera, include 2,500 A. penelope, 3,780 A. clypeata, 2,500 Aythya ferina and 800 Vanellus vanellus. Non-bird biodiversity: None known to BirdLife International.
Delineation rationale: 2011-09-26 (BL Secretariat): centroid coordinates changed from 31°21’N 02°10’E (mistake, based on IWC data) to 36°00'N 07°06’E, and site name changed from 'Garet el-Haaies el Beni Mohammed' to 'Garaet Haouas' (see Samraoui et al. (2011) Ardeola 58(1): 137-163).
