Site details
Site description: Boja swamps lie in the lower reaches of the Shabeelle river a little way downstream (south-west) of Arbowerow (site SO018). The site contains grass swamps and deciduous bushland on the river flood-plain.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: See Box and Table 3 for key species. Of the Somali–Masai biome species Pseudonigrita cabanisi has been recorded from few other IBAs in Somalia. Non-bird biodiversity: Both Loxodonta africana (EN) and Syncerus caffer (LR/cd) occur, or used to do so.
