Site details
Site description: A complex of dune, lake and forest habitats situated in a broad valley. Large areas of a shallow, stream-fed brackish coastal lake are vegetated with Juncus and Phragmites. South of the lake is an extensive, seasonally flooded Fraxinus forest. Quercus and Carpinus forests surround the lake on drier ground; areas of dune have been forested with Pinus. Cattle graze the wetland.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: The area is important for large numbers of wintering wildfowl.
Delineation rationale: Area changed from 785 ha [in 1997/2000 inventory] to 11,330 ha; site was previously just a lake, but has now been expanded to include surrounding land (Kiliç & Eken 2004).

Threats
Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Large numbers of visitors cause considerable disturbance at weekends. The lake is reportedly silting up rapidly and the area of reedbed is expanding as a result. Afforestation of the dunes will lead to further loss of important dune vegetation. Fishing is banned according to Nature Reserve regulations.
