Site details
Site description: A small irrigation storage reservoir on the Gorgan river, c.50 km north-north-east of Gorgan and 35 km west of Gonbad-e Qaboos, in a region of steppe and arable land. The water level fluctuates widely, and extensive mudflats can be exposed, but in most places the banks shelve steeply and there is little emergent vegetation.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: See box for key species. A wintering area for ducks and grebes, notably Netta rufina (up to 340 birds) and Mergellus albellus, and a staging area for shorebirds. Sterna albifrons breeds. Non-bird biodiversity: None known to BirdLife International.
