Site details

Site description: Gently rolling plains at 1,820 m, bordered to the north by the Sanandaj-Hamadan road, to west and south by hill ranges, and to the east by the Cham-e-Golan river. The area is entirely under cultivation for cereals or fallow land, except for several marshy streams. There is a small village at the edge of the hills and several villages along the Cham-e-Golan, but the area is very sparsely populated.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: See box for key species. An important breeding area for Otis tarda in the 1970s; 5-10 females were thought to nest, the birds being present May-September. Flocks of Anas querquedula and Philomachus pugnax have been observed in the marshy areas in autumn. Non-bird biodiversity: None known to BirdLife International.
