Site details

Site description: A large tidal creek (Khor Jask) and adjacent mudflats, beaches, dunes and sparsely vegetated sandy plains on the coast of south-west Iranian Baluchistan, a few kilometres north of the fishing port of Jask. The creek extends several kilometres inland and contains a particularly fine stand (c.100 ha) of mangrove Avicennia marina at its far end. Land ownership is public.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: See boxes for key species. An important staging and wintering area for a wide variety of shorebirds, gulls and terns. Ardeola grayii and Burhinus recurvirostris are probably resident, and Ardea goliath has been recorded. Pterocles exustus and Calandrella raytal occur on the plains. Non-bird biodiversity: None known to BirdLife International.
Delineation rationale: Type 2 marine IBA: non-breeding (coastal) congregations.
