Site details
Site description: An island off Hino, c.7 km south-east of Marbat, lying within the zone of strong upwelling during the summer monsoon.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Additional biodiversity: See box for key species. There is a report of large numbers of terns nesting on the island. Notable numbers of feeding and/or moving seabirds occur offshore, e.g. Puffinus persicus (see box). Non-bird biodiversity: Unusual beds of kelp Ecklonia radiata with abalones Haliotis mariae and the spiny lobster Panulirus homarus occur offshore.
Delineation rationale: Type 1 marine IBA: suitable for the seaward extension approach. Type 2 marine IBA: non-breeding (coastal) congregations.
