Site details
Site description: The IBA comprises two lakes separated by an extensive marsh with reedbeds (Phragmites) and wet meadows, situated at the foot of Büyük Aðrý mountain (Mount Ararat). Saz or Kurtkapan lake is fed mainly by surface run-off whilst Gölyüzü or ªeyhli lake is fed by Balýk lake (site 091). The lakes are covered mainly by reed, with large parts drying up in summer. The plains surrounding the wetland are grazed, and reed-cutting takes place (`Other' land-use).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is also important for breeding waterbirds. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca. According to the limited information available, the site was more important in the past.
