Site details

Site description: A coastal area comprising 2 km2 of dwarf shrubland, dominated by Zygophyllum, Limonium, Atriplex and Suaeda, as well as c3 km2 of Croton shrubland.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Delineation rationale: 2008-12-11 (BL Secretariat): polygon follows the 'Coastal plains at Shu'ab' SSSI [first draft] polygon (provided by RBGE in 2000), amended to also incorporate 'Wadi Shuaab' and 'Shuab Mangrove' Nature Sanctuary polygons; the 1994 coordinates lie well off-centre of this site's polygon, so have been shifted to its centre. 2018-03-21 (BL Secretariat): area reduced from 1400 ha to 500 ha, following Porter and Suleiman (2016).
