Site details
Site description: Originally an island, the site has been joined to the mainland by an artificial embankment and roadway, a process that resulted in the partial enclosure and desalinization of Farehammarsviken Bay (the main part of the reserve). The bay is shallow and brackish with a freshwater inflow. It contains areas of marshy vegetation and is surrounded by grazed coastal meadows. In addition to agricultural activities, the IBA supports a bird observatory.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: Goose grazing is important in maintaining the open landscape. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (wintering) and Crex crex (passage). Three hundred and twenty species have been recorded at the site.
Delineation rationale: Old area: 355ha Changed due to more accurate information on borders and size. /Robert Ekblom (2007-10-24)
