Site details

Site description: The Civil Society Nature Reserve Mana Dulce is located in the Inter-Andean valley of the Magdalena River between the Municipalities of Agua de Dios and Nilo in Cundinamarca, Colombia. The site is dedicated to the protection of the dry tropical forests in the Upper Magdalena Valley. The main threats are posed by tourism and the expansion of agricultural and cattle grazing activities. The land is used by local and indigenous communities that should be consulted in any steps to advance the sustainable management of the site.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. The Civil Society Nature Reserve Mana Dulce supports one of the only known five populations of the Endangered damselfy species Acanthagrion williamsoni (Pers. Comm. Bota-Sierra, 2021).
Delineation rationale: Adopting the existing protected area boundary Mana Dulce Civil Society Nature Reserve (WDPA ID 555697821).
