Site description: The KBA Reserva Paisajística Nor Yauyos Cochas y zona de amortiguamiento covers an area of 3415.36 sq km and it's located within the provinces of Yauli, Jauja and Chupaca in the department of Junín and the provinces of Huarochirí and Yauyos in the department of Lima. The altitude range of the KBA Reserva Paisajistica Nor Yauyos Cochas y zona de amortiguamiento is 2650-5850 masl. The main climate types in the KBA Reserva Paisajistica Nor Yauyos Cochas y zona de amortiguamiento are: 1) Cold, rainy with dry autumn and winter, the maximum temperature ranges from 9°C to 19°C , the minimum temperature ranges from -3°C to 3°C and the annual precipitation ranges from 500 mm to 1200 mm; and in a small proportion 2) Cold, semi-dry with dry autumn and winter (to northeast), 3) Semi-rigid, rainy with abundant humidity all seasons of the year, 4) Glacier, perennial ice (northwest and southeast patches), 5) Cold, semi-dry with dry winter, 6) Cold, semi-dry with dry autumn and winter and 7) Temperate, semi-arid with dry winter (southeast patches). The KBA Reserva Paisajistica Nor Yauyos Cochas y zona de amortiguamiento presents the following ecosystems: ca. 69% of Wet puna grassland "Pajonal de puna húmeda", approximately 21% of "Periglacial", approximately 5% of Andean shrubland "Matorral andino", approximately 2% of "Lake and lagoon", approximately 1% of "High Andean relic forest (Queñoal and others)", approximately 1% of "Bofedal" and approximately 1% of glacier.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Reserva Paisajistica Nor Yauyos Cochas y zona de amortiguamiento qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. The KBA Reserva Paisajistica Nor Yauyos Cochas y zona de amortiguamiento harbors five trigger species of plants, the Vulnerable Andean deer or Taruka (Hippocamelus antisensis), the range restricted bird species: Cinclodes palliatus (CR), Geositta saxicolina and Asthenes virgata.

Manageability of the site: The KBA Reserva Paisajistica Nor Yauyos Cochas y zona de amortiguamiento can be managed by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP. Currently, there is a proposal for the creation of a Private Conservation Area with the community of Tomas in part of the buffer zone of the Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve. The National Coordination Group of KBAs has a conservation promotion and monitoring committee, which is composed of various governmental and civil society institutions that will work to promote conservation actions in the KBAs.

Delineation rationale: The boundaries of the KBA Reserva Paisajistica Nor Yauyos Cochas y zona de amortiguamiento follow exactly the boundaries of the Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve buffer zone and include the rural community of Tomas to the southeast.
