Site details


Site description: The KBA Bosque de Protección de Pui Pui is located in Peru, in the department of Junín, provinces of Chanchamayo, Satipo and Jauja. This KBA covers an area of 679.161 sq km. Its territory is characterized by a mountainous landscape, with very rugged terrain and exceptional scenic beauty, featuring steep slopes across almost its entire expanse. The climate is warm and very humid with marked variations depending on the altitude. It is warm in the lower parts and becomes temperate as it approaches the Andean heights. The altitude of the area fluctuates between 1700 and 4500 masl. In the southwest, there are natural grasslands and snowy peaks. The average annual temperature ranges between 6°C and 15°C. It includes the following ecosystems: "Bosque altimontano (Pluvial) de Yunga (Yunga high altimontane forest (Pluvial)", and "Pajonal de puna húmeda (Puna humeda grassland)".
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Bosque de Protección Pui Pui qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area that meets the thresholds of A1 and B2 criteria outlined in the Global Standard for KBA Identification. KBA Bosque de Protección Pui Pui is home to the Endangered toad, Rhinella yanachaga, three range restricted frogs: Pristimantis puipui, Pristimantis ashaninka and Pristimantis humboldti, and three range restricted birds: Asthenes palpebralis, Metallura eupogon and Scytalopus macropurus.

Manageability of the site: Since this KBA enclosures the Bosque de Protección Pui Pui, it can be managed by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP.
Delineation rationale: The boundaries of this KBA precisely follow the limits of the Pui Pui Protection Forest and the Buffer Zone located within the Pichanaqui district of the Junín department.
