Site details


Site description: This site is located in the Federal District and the state of Morelos, it has an area of ​​100,146 ha and an altitude range of 2,900 to 3,950 meters above sea level. In the area, Pine Forests with high-altitude Grassland, Mixed Pine-Oak Forests, Oyamel Forests, high-mountain Zacatonales and Prairies that are associated with geoforms such as craters, plains, slopes, pedregales, foothills and ravines predominate. (Velázquez, 1993 and Velázquez, et al. 1996). Threats include agriculture, livestock, urban development, introduction of exotic species, deforestation, and tourism.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site contains the entire known population of the Morelos False Brook Salamander and the Sierra Madre Sparrow and holds important populations of Eleutherodactylus grandis. The Volcano Rabbit and 21 bird species meet legacy criteria and are in need of reassessment.
