Site description: The KBA Dos de Mayo-Lauricocha covers an area of 1680.96 sq km and it's located in Perú, in the department of Huánuco, in the provinces of Dos de Mayo, Lauricocha, Yarowilca and Huamalíes. The altitude of this KBA ranges between 3200 and 4200 masl. The main climate type in this KBA is cold and rainy with dry autumn and winter. In this climate, the maximum temperature ranges between 9°C and 19°C; the minimum temperature, between -3°C and 3°C; and the annual precipitation, between 500 mm and 1200 mm. This KBA includes the following ecosystems: Pajonal de puna húmeda, Jalca and Matorral Andino.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Dos de Mayo-Lauricocha qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for A1, B1 and B2 criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBA. The KBA Dos de Mayo-Lauricocha is home to the vulnerable frog Telmatobius carrillae, the endangered Krapfia macropetala, a range-restricted lizard Liolaemus chavin and two range restricted birds Atlapetes rufigenis and Anairetes nigrocristatus.
Manageability of the site: The KBA Dos de Mayo-Lauricocha can potentially be managed by the regional government of Huánuco (https://www.gob.pe/regionhuanuco) because it has the capacity to establish Regional Conservation Areas.
