Site details

Site description: The cloud forests of the Costa Grande de Guerrero, are located in the extreme southwest of the Sierra Madre del Sur in the state of Guerrero, It is a corridor that presents an altitude gradient that goes from 400 to 3,534 meters, in which ecosystems are developed that go from: low deciduous forest, medium sub-deciduous forest, medium sub-evergreen forest, pine-oak forest, pine forest, and important continuous areas of mountain cloud forest. It is considered that this region shelters the most continuous cloud forests in the best state of conservation in the state of Guerrero, and is also one of the sites with the greatest richness of diurnal butterfly species in the country (Llorente, et al., 1993) In the western portion of the Sierra Madre del Sur there are isolated populations of hummingbirds and other birds that have discontinuous distributions relative to their close relatives in Central America, suggesting that these forests represent positive refugia from the Pleistocene.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site contains the entire known population of Thomas' Giant Deer Mouse, the Short-crested Coquette, the amphibians Pseudoeurycea ahuitzotl, Pseudoeurycea teotepec, Pseudoeurycea tlahcuiloh, Sarcohyla toyota, Thorius grandis, Thorius infernalis, and important populations of the threatened Lilac-crowned Amazon. Charadrahyla trux and Craugastor uno were former AZE species which no longer meet A1e and data can not confirm them under other criteria. Pseudoeurycea tenchalli now meets A1e for a different site. Other 52 bird species trigger legacy KBA criteria and are in need of reassessment.
Manageability of the site: Site was identified as a IBA/KBA and confirmed as and AZE during the 2015-2018 AZE update. A manageability rationale is not available.
Delineation rationale: Site was identified as a IBA/KBA and confirmed as and AZE during the 2015-2018 AZE update. A delineation rationale is not available.
