Site details

Site description: The KBA Reserva Nacional de Tumbes covers an area of 194.46 km and it's located within Peru, in the department of Tumbes, provinces Zarumilla and Tumbes. The altitude range of the KBA is 160 to 865 masl and it is located in the north and together with the El Angolo Game Preserve, the Cerros de Amotapepe National Park and the Los Manglares de Tumbes National Sanctuary, it forms the Northwest Amotapes - Mangroves Biosphere Reserve, designated in 1977 by UNESCO. The topography is hilly and undulating towards the coast and steeper towards the foothills of the Amotapes Massif. It is a dry forest of northwestern Peru (Leal-Pinedo & Linares-Palomino 2005) where a rich biota can be observed such as Forpus xanthops, Brotogeris pyrrhopterus, Leucopternis occidentalis, mammals such as Odocoileus virginianus, Sciurus stramineus, Lontra longicaudis, the Tumbes spotted monkey Alouatta palliata (Hurtado ey al 2016), Tumbes crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) and plants such as Ceiba, Prosopis, Pithecellobium and Bursera graveolens among others. The climate is subtropical, with an average annual rainfall of 1350 mm, ranging from 100 to 2000 mm. Temperatures vary from 35° C in February to 15°C in July and August. In the Reserva Nacional de Tumbes, you can fully appreciate the Pacific Tropical Forest, which is an ecosystem found only in this area. It represents a kind of continuation of the tropical jungle on the western slope of the Andes.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Reserva Nacional de Tumbes qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the threshold for the B2 criterion for birds Lathrotriccus griseipectus, Grallaria watkinsi and Clibanornis erythrocephalus.
Additional biodiversity: Brotogeris pyrrhoptera
Manageability of the site: Since this KBA enclosures the Reserva Nacional de Tumbes, it can be potentially manageable by the National Service of Protected Natural Areas - SERNANP.
Other site values: No indigenous communities were identified
Delineation rationale: The limits are the same as those of the Tumbes National Reserve delimited by the Natural Protected Areas Service. This site is bordered to the northwest by the Cerros de Amotape National Park, to the southeast, it follows the border limit with Ecuador.
