Site description: The KBA Cabeceras de Lacco Yavero covers an area of 773.6 sq km and is located within the province of La Convención and the province of Calca, in the department of Cusco. The altitudinal range of this KBA goes from 750 to 3900 masl. The KBA Cabeceras de Lacco Yavero presents two main climate types: 1) Rainy with high humidity all seasons of the year, temperate with maximum temperatures between 25°C and 29°C, minimum temperatures between 11°C and 17°C, and annual rainfall between 1200 mm and 3000 mm approximately; 2) Rainy with dry winter, temperate with maximum temperatures between 17°C and 23°C, minimum temperatures between 7°C and 11°C, and annual rainfall between 1200 mm and 1800 mm approximately. This KBA presents the following ecosystems: ""Bosque basimontano de Yunga"", ""Bosque montano de Yunga"", ""Bosque altimontano (Pluvial) de Yunga"", "" Pajonal de puna húmeda"" and ""Vegetación secundaria"".
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: The KBA Cabeceras de Lacco Yavero qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets the B2 criteria for identifying sites of biodiversity importance accorging to Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. This KBA harbors seven range restricted bird species (Grallaria erythroleuca, Kleinothraupis parodii, Amazilia viridicauda, Asthenes helleri, Atlapetes canigenis, Cranioleuca marcapatae and Pheugopedius eisenmanni).

Birds: Atlapetes albiceps, Campephilus gayaquilensis, Clibanornis erythrocephalus, Crypturellus transfasciatus, Cyanocorax mystacalis, Forpus coelestis, Icterus graceannae, Kleinothraupis parodii, Lathrotriccus griseipectus, Leptotila ochraceiventris, Leucippus baeri, Melanopareia elegans, Myiarchus phaeocephalus, Myiodynastes bairdii, Myiopagis subplacens, Myrmia micrura, Nyctidromus anthonyi, Penelope albipennis, Phytotoma raimondii, Picumnus sclateri, Pseudelaenia leucospodia, Psittacara erythrogenys, Sakesphorus bernardi, Synallaxis stictothorax, Thryothorus superciliaris, Tumbezia salvini, and Turdus reevei.
Manageability of the site: This KBA could be managed by the Municipality of La Convención province. Additionally, the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP) could provide technical support, as part of this KBA is located in the buffer zone of the Megantoni National Sanctuary.

Delineation rationale: To the southwest the KBA follows the margin of the Yanatile river and the Av. Calca highway. It crosses a tributary of the Chanchamayo River to the district limit between Quellouno and Echarate.
