Site details
Site description: Narupa KBA is located between the most important cloudforest mountains of the northern Amazon of Ecuador in Napo province. This site is not just special for range restricted species of the upper amazon basin, but for migratory boreal birds. Located between 1150 to 2050 m., its main ecosystems are: Lower montane and the foothill evergreen forest of the northeastern slope of the Andes.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least five criteria described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs. Threatened of extinction species, like the globally endangered rain-frog, Pristimantis cremnobates (A1a). Two globally vulnerable to extinction species, the tinamou Tinamus osgoodi (A1d) and the plant, Ceratostema nodosum (A1b). Additionally, two recently described herps, Synophis bogerti (B1) and Pristimantis miltongallardoi (B1). And, the lizard, Anolis fitchi (B2).
Additional biodiversity: Mammals: Tapirus pinchaque, Tremarctos ornatus, Leopardus tigrinus, Harpia harpyja, Panthera onca.
Birds: Spizaetus isidori
Manageability of the site: This KBA comprises a private reserve (Narupa) administrated by Jocotoco Foundation, mainly. However, about the surrounding areas it is suggested an approach about its limits and neighbourhood forests privately owned and -probably- owned by indigenous kichwa nationalities to be certain about land owning in this site.
Supersedes another site: None. This is a new KBA.
Other site values: Certain zones on the surrounding areas can or can not be part of the kichwa ancestral nationality of the amazon.
Delineation rationale: On north and northwest the limits of two national parks, Antisana and Sumaco-Napo Galereas. On east, the KBA named, Conector Sumaco. On south, the agricultural areas and cattle pastures plus the main road of the amazonian panamerican towards Coca near the village of Jondachi.
