Site details


Site description: A complex of freshwater lakes (resulting partly from peat diggings), reedbeds and wet meadows, located to the east of the city of Leeuwarden. Human activities include reed-harvesting (`Other' land-use, below), and the site includes two duck decoys.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that meets the thresholds for at least one criterion described in the Global Standard for the Identification of KBAs.
Additional biodiversity: An important roost for geese Anser which come from surrounding feeding areas.
Delineation rationale: 9 March 2017: name and area edited. Now equal to the designated Special Protection Area (Birds Directive).
