Site details


Site description: A polder of wet grassland, located to the north-east of the city of Amersfoort. The site adjoins Lake Wolderwijd (043) in the east and is close to Lake Eemmeer (045) in the west. This site, together with site 045, formed part of a single, larger site (former site NL033) in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.

Threats


Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: The main threats in the long term are posed by (further) drainage and the expansion of the city of Amersfoort and nearby villages. A compensation scheme is in place for those farmers affected by restrictions on agricultural practices.
