Site details
Site description: The area contains remnant fragments of a raised bog (formerly 30,000 ha in extent), and includes pools, peatlands, marshes, swampy Betula forest and Molinia heathland. The site is situated near to Mariapeel en Deurnesepeel (086), north-east of the city of Weert. This site, together with sites 086 and 088, formed part of a single, larger site (former site NL056) in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: The site is a roost for Anser fabalis, but counts probably underestimate actual numbers.
Delineation rationale: 9 March 2017: area edited. Now equal to the designated Special Protection Area (Birds Directive).
