Site details


Site description: A 20-km-long area of heathland and forest with scrub, fen, hedges and some cultivated land. Forest stands consist of conifer plantations and deciduous/mixed woodlands of various ages and under varying management regimes. The site is situated on the east bank of the River Maas (also known as `Maasduinen'), between the villages of Heijen and Arcen.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
