Site details


Site description: The IBA Fruška gora is positioned at the southern ridge of the Pannonian Basin, along the right Danube riverbank. This hilly area represents the dominant orographic unit of the Vojvodina Province with highest altitude of 539 m above sea level. It has an elongated shape, 78 km long and around 15 km wide. The Fruška gora has specific and unique natural phenomenon built of rocks from nearly all geological periods, from the oldest Palaeozoic to Mesozoic, Neogene and Quaternary. Forest covers more than 80% of area where linden forest dominate growing over one third of area. Entire area is surrounded by eight municipalities which consists 27 settlements.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance because it meets one or more previously established criteria and thresholds for identifying sites of biodiversity importance (including Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, and Key Biodiversity Areas)
Delineation rationale: 2014-10-14 (BL Secretariat): following Puzović (2009), site area changed from 42000 ha to 49210 ha; coordinates changed from 45.067N 19.567E to 45°9'19'N 19°39'10'E.
