Site details
Site description: A low-lying flood-plain situated between Körösnagyharsány and Mezõgyán, which is not subject to the effects of natural flooding. A large system of fish-ponds are managed for conservation, and are surrounded by extensive saline grasslands and arable fields. Human activities include sheep- and cattle-grazing, reed-harvesting (`Other' land-use, below), hunting, angling and birdwatching.
Rationale for qualifying as KBA: This site qualifies as a Key Biodiversity Area of international significance that was identified using previously established criteria and thresholds for the identification of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) and for which available data indicate that it does not meet global KBA criteria and thresholds set out in the Global Standard.
Additional biodiversity: An important area for both breeding and passage waterbirds. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (50-150 birds on passage), Otis tarda (5-10 breeding individuals).

Threats
Summary of threats to biodiversity at KBA: Threats include inappropriate timing of the flooding and draining of fish-ponds, uncontrolled burning and the introduction of grass carp Ctenopharyngodon. Artificial nest-sites are provided, and wildfowl shooting is prohibited. A management plan exists for the area.
